DCRA Responds to Requests to Board Up Nuisance Property

Dear Neighbors, for weeks MPD has been conducting arrests for unlawful trespassing at the abandoned property at 18 Bates ST NW.  The property is also filled with trash that overflows on to the alley and houses rats among other animals.

Through a partnership with MDP and Council Member Thomas’ Office, we were able to get a response from DCRA to address this property (see email from DCRA below). If you have an abandoned property in your block that is becoming a nuisance or danger, you may email DCRA at vacantproperty@dc.gov.

 Email dated June 28, 2010

Good Afternoon Mr. Bonilla:

I am contacting you on behalf of the Director.  On June 15, 2010, DCRA’s Inspections Division (ICA) conducted a vacant property 45-day compliance re-inspection and found the violations previously identified remain unabated.   ICA forwarded the case to DCRA’s Enforcement Division for attention.

The Enforcement Division has assigned the property to the Abatement Team’s schedule to clean up the rear yard and board the windows by COB Thursday, July 1.

In addition, ICA deemed the property as blighted which makes it eligible for the higher tax rate.

Thank you for bringing this matter to the Director’s attention.

Director Argo –

MPD and residents of the area around 18 Bates ST NW have made numerous request to DCRA to board up this house which is infested by rats and a haven for criminal activity and trespassers. MPD makes weekly arrests at this location. Most recent one included below.

DCRA thus far has failed to board up this property; making it unsafe for us and the jobs of our officers harder. We really need your assistance in addressing this property and helping MPD make this neighborhood safer.

 ARREST# : 051003037
DT-TM: 23-JUN-10 – 1715
