Help us add to this list my making recommendations.
Certified Services
Dan
703-402-9591
Jon from 3rd St: I wish I found Dan at Certified Services sooner than I did. Then I would be able to write that he fixed everything in my house. After I found Dan, I had him do everything that was left. I love the bathrooms he did.
Hopeday Improvements
John Garces, owner
http://www.hopedayimprovements.com
Amanda from Bloomingdale blog: Our contractor of choice is John Garces, who owns Hopeday Improvements. He is a great guy who does all kinds of jobs big and small.

Mark from Bloomingdale blog: If you want a one-man-band general contractor, I highly recommend Paul. His particular area is fitting kitchens, bathrooms and carpentry but he can turn his hand to most things (he fitted windows, HVAC and did welding work for me as well as bathroom, kitchen and ceilings). He subcontracts electrics and plumbing but will supervise and coordinate the work. He’s reliable and honest and will deliver the project on-time.
Jose Lopez Enterprises
240- 832- 3621
jandlcompany@aol.com
From Bloomingdale listserv: “Jose is a great trustworthy general contractor that is doing my complete gut-rehab and has worked for many people I know from colleagues at work to friends and neighbors–from the very rich to the very money conscious. He does jobs of various sizes from small jobs to complete rehabs. Anyone interested can come see his work in progress at 114 W Street NW. You won’t be disappointed!
Thomas Redding
Thomas Designs & Construction, Inc.
703- 752- 1614
From a 3rd Street NW resident: “They installed a kitchen from scratch for us… along with miscellaneous other work. They are licensed in DC and MD, bonded and insured.”
Ark Contracting
http://www.arkcontracting.com
From U St Listserv: My friend’s recently remodeled house was featured in the Washington Post Magazine and she absolutely loved her contractor – something that I think is quite rare.
Kevin Construction
202 744 4082
Eckington list: I have used him for my garage and he was great. He is also re-doing the townhouse on 4th NE between U and V.
Carlos Pereira
Rio Construction
rioconstruction@verizon.net
Ray from the Shaw list: I’ve used him for the last
fifteen years. They have worked miracles in my house and recently redone my back yard — pergola, brick barbecue, fountain — run electric lines and lights. His painters and wall guys have done over four rooms and he
replumbed my bath.
I’ll second the recommendation for Jose Lopez listed above. I hired his company for some window work and was very impressed with the results. The job was finished in less time than originally expected and the quality of work was top notch. I would definitely use him again for any projects.
+ From a Quincy Place NW resident:: “To the individual seeking a company for brick work, I highly recommend J. Portillo Construction Inc. Tel-571-722-9034 http://us.mc5.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=email- portilloconstruction @ yahoo.es .”
From a Flagler Place NW resident:
a professional engineer familiar with basement excavations. He did our plans and they were of high quality (and necessary for approval of the demolition/building permits by DCRA).

Jose Lopez Enterprises is finishing up work on our home. Thank you for the original poster, and thank you to Jose Lopez Enterprises. Everything looks great, and new, and nice, and finished. I had a long list of honey-do’s. It would have filled my Saturdays for years. Well, now, it is all done and this place is very livable.
