Green reason to paint the roof white

From the Bloomingdale list:

See this message from a Bloomingdale architect: “The Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu just announced he wants roofs to be painted white in an effort to tackle climate change. White roofs are the most efficient at reflecting heat back into space and save considerable money in cooling a house in the summer. I recently replaced my roof with a new metal tin roof 5 yrs ago and used a white elastometic paint. The result is a significant decrease in the amount of radiant heat being transferred though the house, especially in taller townhomes where the upper level can boil in the summer. If anyone is looking for a product to recoat an existing roof I would recommend Acrymax products, located in Pa.(acrymax.com) These coatings can be used on existing roofs made of metal as well as other materials. They will ship the paint to you, and more importantly you can take a TAX CREDIT in 2009 as part of the President’s stimulus initiative for a portion of the purchase price as certain elastomeric coatings have an Energy Star label an therefore qualify for the stimulus credit. Below is the link to Yahoo News announcing the green roof initiative by Secretary Chu and below that is the link to information on the tax credit. If we as a community can set an example, we’ll keep Bloomingdale blooming. Paint that roof WHITE and GO GREEN!!
