  1. I wonder if his highness will cross NJ Ave and look at the what will soon be the largest parking lot, “Car Park,” in Shaw per this notice this afternoon:

No public input on this decision at all.

Re: [ShawNeighborhood] Bundy Lot Info from the Office of Property Management (OPM)

I’d like to point out that there was NO community involvement in the decision to turn Bundy School over to Safe Shores in the first place. It was presented to the community as a done deal, with no input from the ANC or anyone else. The first time that the community got a briefing on plans for Bundy School was at Kevin Chapple’s single-member district meeting in February 2007. Moreover, at that time the representative from Safe Shores said specifically that only the school proper was to be included in the project and that it would not affect the big parking lot to the rear of the school which was owned by the federal government. http://fifthandoh.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html

The parking lot area in question is enormous and could accommodate enough cars for a small shopping mall–far more than are likely to be using the Bund facility after Safe Shores moves in. In fact the dog park proposal would require only a small portion–maybe 20-25% of the area, which would leave more than adequate parking for clients and employees (who I suspect will actually be the primary beneficiaries). Even with the construction now going on, only a small part of the area has ever been used for parking. If, in fact, there is a need for parking, there is no reason that both uses could not be accommodated in that space.

I’ll stipulate for the record that I do not expect to make use of a dog park, but I know from experience elsewhere that such park can be a great asset to this community, which is something that Safe Shores will not be.

  2. On the issue of the Bundy parking lot, Councilman Jack Evans responded as such on the Shaw list serv:

Actually, you and schannette exchanged several e mails and I have been following the e mail traffic. I have been focused on the crime bill esp the gang provisions and the convention ctr hotel, both very important to shaw. Also the new revenue estimates were released today creating a 190 million problem this year. I have worked closely with neighbors at shaw junior hs to create a dog park and at 17th and s st to create one. It is important to follow the process and submit an application as schannette explained to you. I noted in one e mail that you were told the parking lot was federal land in a presentation in 2007. I suggest we all talk further and discuss how to proceed. Jack
