Taking care of our Neighbors – Mugging on Bates

From a Bates Area resident:

I live on Bates and follow this blog regularly. My husband and I got home tonight and noticed the police van on the corner of Bates & 1st. We wondered what’s going on so we talked to our next door neighbor. We found out that another neighbor was mugged on our street (in fact a few feet from our house!) last Saturday. We don’t know the whole story except that it happened last Saturday at around 2 am. We weren’t home all weekend so we were not aware that this happened. I know this blog is not a collection of crime stories however, it’s important to make everybody aware of what’s happening in our surroundings. It’s a bit alarming that just a week ago a couple of people were stabbed on Q St and now, the mugging on Bates. We should all take extra precaution and be vigilant. It is important that we neighbors look out for each other. If we see suspicious characters walking around our neighborhood, we shouldn’t hesitate to call the police!

Moderator’s Note: We have as an editorial policy shied away from posting every crime that comes our way, but when the crime is big enough or a reader writes in and is personally affected, I think it shows our concerns as caring neighbors to allow discussion here. Several months ago, another Bates St. neighbor was attacked during the day and I know one other woman that was mugged on Bates over a year ago. With all the improvements we see in our neighborhood, we live in a city and should always show caution and look out for each other. And always call the police. Thanks to this reader for posting.
