DC Home Tax Sale starts Sept 9

I saw this on the list servs from Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham:

Do you—or someone you know–owe back taxes on your home or property? I have been advised that from September 9 through September 11, the Office of Tax and Revenue will hold its annual tax sale. At that sale, taxpayers that owe back taxes (“delinquent taxes”) on their homes may have their homes put up for auction so that the District can recuperate the debt.

It’s important to know your rights if your home is auctioned at a tax sale:

  1. A tax sale does not mean that the tax purchaser has an immediate right to enter or take possession of your home.
  2. A homeowner has six (6) months from the last day of the sale to pay off the delinquent taxes and redeem their home.
  3. If the homeowner does not redeem his or her home within that six-month period, the tax purchaser may receive a deed to the home at the end of that period.
  • If you believe that your home is subject to a real property tax sale; please call the DC Office of Tax and Revenue at 202-727-4829.
  • If you are 60 years or older and need assistance with a property tax problem, you can call the AARP’s Legal Counsel for the Elderly at 202-434-2120.

In the meantime, if you have further questions on this issue, you may contact me or my legislative Director, Steven Hernandez.

Bests,

Councilmember Jim Graham
