This is written to provide you with a friendly reminder of the March 1, 2010 meeting of the Bates Area Civic Association, Inc. as well as to give you a sense of the issues that will be addressed in this forum. Please help us to spread the word to others about this monthly meeting and do make your best effort to attend. If you are willing to help with the circulation of flyers about this meeting, please let me know and I will get them to you.
Invited Guests:
(a) Vernon R. Morris, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Chemistry and Atmospheric Sciences at Howard University, has been invited by the Youth Services Committee to be a featured speaker for this month’s meeting. Specifically, Dr. Morris is going to make us aware of the educational and enrichment opportunities that are available to Bates Area students via the Chemistry Department at Howard University and he intends to underscore the importance of there being a viable working relationship between the HU and the residents of the community that surrounds it.
(b) Ms. Elizabeth Lyttleton, an Eckington resident who provides occasional consulting services to Big Bear Café, asked for time on our agenda to apprise our group of the status of the cafe’s current efforts to acquire a license from the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. I am advised that Ms. Lyttleton developed a scheduling conflict that won’t allow her to attend Monday’s meeting in person; however, she plans to identify someone else to make her expected presentation and to answer any questions that it might generate.
(c) Ms. Ashaki Goodall and Mr. Harvey Wesley, from the Community Academy Public Charter School, will be in attendance at our meeting to talk about CAPCS’ proposed plans for the use of its Ellington-Eckstein Theater at their Dorothy Height Campus, as well as to answer any questions that come up.
(d) Finally, Mr. Sasha Musaey, the property owner of 1237 First Street, N.W., will be given time on our agenda to talk about the driveway that he is proposing for that location and the “curb cut” that he is seeking in order to access the new driveway. Although this project is in ANC 5C02, Mr. Musaey’s proposed curb cut could have an impact upon our area (depending upon where it is planned to be located).

Finally, it is important for you to subscribe to the Blog via email. If you do, one email per day will be sent to the address of your choice in which summaries of the messages that have been posted on the Blog will be contained. Closing Comments: In addition to my own comments, ANC Commissioners Anita Bonds (SMD 5C01) and Sylvia Pinkney (SMD 5C02), respectively, have standing invitations to make remarks and give announcements at our monthly meetings, as does Mr. Richard Norwood, the Ward Five Coordinator from the Mayor’s Office of Community Relations and Services.
