District Republicans are accusing D.C. Council member Harry Thomas Jr. (D-Ward 5) of raising money for a “slush fund” that he depicts as a nonprofit group even though it is not registered with the IRS and is not in good standing with the city government.
Tim Day, an accountant who is challenging Thomas in the Nov. 2 general election, said the incumbent has been raising money for his Team Thomas/SwingAway LLC program for years but has not been disclosing who his donors are or where the money goes.
“This is a fake organization,” Day said. “If he has truly received money and donations and has given it back to his community, he should be more than willing to provide documentation.” Continue reading at the Wash Post…
Just my opinion, but would it be possible to avoid political posts? Anyone on the Eckington listserv can see how quickly these things get really divisive.
Thank you Mike and your point is very well taken. This is a Washington Post story that was placed on the blog and not an opinion regarding CM Thoma’s. In truth, BACA hosted CM Thomas during his campaing for re-election as well as posted information regarding other candidates. BACA is tremendously impacted by ANC and Council elections. So if we allow candidates tell us their campaing speeches, we have the same responsibility to report factual news coverage. I agree though, BACA should not provide an a political opinion and remain neutral.
