City ignores concern over Cook

Despite concerns against having the the Latin America Youth Center run programs out of the John F. Cook School at 30 P St. NW, it appears the city has given $1.74 million to LAYC for the school’s renovation. ANC5c02 Commissioner Sylvia Pinkney has gathered hundreds of signatures against LAYC at Cook. Bates Area and Hanover civic associations have expressed their opposition against LAYC at Cook, and according to neighborhood meetings I have attended those organizations along with the ANC5c were intending to pass formal resolutions against LAYC’s intent to be in our neighborhood. When Mayor Fenty visited our area, he seemed visibly surprised at its use and said he would discuss it with the community in October when he revisited.

What’s going on? Is our government oblivious?
