Howard Theatre Roadway Reconstruction Project Set to Start Tomorrow

Improvements Coincide with Restoration of Historic Landmark

(Washington, D.C.) On Wednesday, February 1, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will begin the reconstruction of the roadways around the historic Howard Theatre in the Shaw neighborhood of Northwest DC. The road construction project coincides with the restoration of the national landmark which was built in 1910 and helped launch the careers of many famous performers including Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Marvin Gaye, and the Supremes.

DDOT’s project will include roadway reconstruction and streetscape work on T Street, from 7th Street to Florida Avenue, and on Wiltberger Street, from T Street to S Street. Work will also occur in the alley located just west of Wiltberger Street between T and S Streets and the alley located between Florida Avenue and T Street.

Street Closures

T Street will remain closed between 7th Street and Florida Avenue for the duration of construction and a detour will be provided. The work will also include the resurfacing of 7th Street at T Street and the development of Ellington Plaza.

While T Street is under construction traffic access will be limited to local residents and business.

Work will be conducted between the hours of 7 am and 7 pm, Monday through Saturday. Advance notice signs will be posted 72 hours before the closure of any sidewalks, roadways or alley entrances.

DDOT appreciates the local communities’ patience and understanding during the construction which will greatly enhance the overall appearance of the area.
