Lane Closures in 3rd Street Tunnel

Dear Residents, Businesses and Other Community Stakeholders:

We quickly resumed work right after the Memorial Day Weekend and are preparing to move full-speed into the next phases.

Next week plans include night work in the tunnel and sidewalk changes on K Street. In case you missed it, below is the DDOT traffic advisory:

Lane Closures in 3rd Street Tunnel for Rehabilitation Work on Bridges over I-395
Lanes Also Shifted on K Street to Facilitate Project

(Washington, D.C.) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will start to remove stone fascia on the K Street and Massachusetts Avenue bridges over I-395 beginning Monday, June 4, to replace expansion joints on the bridges.

To facilitate this work lanes have shifted on K Street and the following lane closures on north and southbound I-395 (3rd Street Tunnel) are anticipated:

I-395 Southbound and Northbound Tunnels

One lane will be closed on each side of the tunnel on two consecutive nights, Monday, June 4 and Tuesday, June 5, from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., as the contractor removes the stone fascia.

Directional signs will be installed and traffic tapering will begin before the work areas northbound at the Massachusetts Avenue ramp and at the southbound entrance to the tunnel from New York Avenue.

K Street Update

Traffic has shifted to the north side of K Street while the contractor works on the south half of K Street between 3rd Street and New Jersey Avenue, NW. The adjacent contractor has also shifted traffic to the north side of K Street through their project limits.

In keeping with DDOT traffic regulations, one lane of traffic will be maintained at all times in each direction. Work may also occur on weekends as needed. Traffic and pedestrians are urged to follow the modified traffic patterns. They may also wish to consider an alternate route or factor more time in their daily travel while this important work is completed.
