Dear Friends and Family:
As you may or may not know I have decided to brush the rust and dust off my running legs and will be running the Marine Corp Marathon (MCM) for the George Washington University Cancer Institute’s (GWCI) fundraising team. Below is a little more information about GWCI and the work that they do for cancer patients.
The George Washington University Cancer Institute (GWCI) is grateful for all of the runners who have pledged to run the Marine Corps Marathon and raise money to help us improve the lives of people affected by cancer through our innovative local and national initiatives.
As an example of our efforts, we provide care for cancer survivors who have finished treatment but face ongoing medical and psychosocial issues from their cancer and its treatment through our innovative Thriving After Cancer (TAC) clinic. TAC was the first survivorship clinic for adults in the DC-area and is used as a national example of how to best care for cancer survivors. In this multi-disciplinary clinic, survivors are seen by a patient navigator, nurse practitioner, psychiatrist and dietitian.
Through TAC we are able to connect survivors to necessary health care and resources that can positively impact their lives. For instance, one survivor who came to our clinic, a 30-something brain tumor survivor, had not had regular health care for many years. Although he did not have adequate insurance to cover the clinic, our survivorship patient navigator helped him get appropriate insurance. She also worked closely with him to find dental care and reduced cost Metro transportation to come to the clinic and is currently working with him to continue his education and find employment. This is just one example of GWCI’s work and commitment to people affected by cancer.
There is still time to help me reach and even exceed my fundraising goal. Make sure you visit the GWCI MCM roster team page and click on my name to donate: https://my.gwu.edu/mod/cancerinstitute/mcmroster.cfm?type=mcm
Thank you,
Glen
