First Street Construction Project Starts in January

The DC Department of Transportation (DDOT) expects construction to start in first quarter of 2013 on First Street, NE. The project will rebuild the entirety of First Street, NE and its sidewalks from Columbus Circle to New York Avenue, including significant improvements to the side streets of K, L Pierce, M, Patterson, and N. The most significant impact will be north of K Street.

The reconstruction will upgrade underground infrastructure, add stormwater catch basins, install a two-way cycle track, install bio-retention stormwater swales, realign sidewalks, enlarge tree boxes, add new crosswalks, install new traffic lights and street lamps, and landscape the pubic space adjacent to unfinished parcels. Initially, the west-side traffic lane and many sidewalks will be closed. Upon completion of the west half of the street, construction will move to the east side. Construction is anticipated to last nearly two years.
