2013 Community Engagement Hours
Councilmember McDuffie kicks off his 2013 community office hours across the ward. This is a tradition the Councilmember started shortly after taking office. These meetings are designed to give Ward 5 residents a venue to voice their concerns and offer suggestions without having to travel to the John A. Wilson Building.
The kickoff meeting will be on February 1, from 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. at Flip It Bakery and Deli, located at 1544 Rhode Island Avenue NE. We look forward to seeing you there!
Councilmember McDuffie will March for Gun Control
On Saturday, January 26, at the U.S. Capitol Reflecting Pool east of Third Street NW, Councilmember McDuffie will join Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and Councilmembers David Grosso (I – At Large) and Tommy Wells (D – Ward 6) to walk along Constitution Avenue in support of gun control in our nation. They will lead the March to the Washington Monument carrying a banner that reads “When we stand together, we stand a chance.”
Time To Sign Up For The D.C. Summer Youth Employment Program
The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is a locally funded initiative sponsored by the Department of Employment Services that provides District youth ages 14-21 with enriching and constructive summer work experiences through subsidized placements in the private and government sectors. Applications must be completed online at the SYEP’s website at http://www.summerjobs.dc.gov.
The online application will be available beginning Friday, January 25 at 12:15pm. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis and must be received no later than Saturday, February 16. Space is limited, so apply early!

McDuffie Introduces Bill Requiring Candidates and Treasurers to Complete Campaign Finance Training
Councilmember McDuffie, Chair of the Committee on Government Operations, along with Councilmember Muriel Bowser (D – Ward 4), Councilmember Tommy Wells (D – Ward 6) and Councilmember David Grosso (I – At-Large), introduced the “Campaign Finance Training Amendment Act of 2013” at this week’s Committee of the Whole meeting.
This legislation would establish a mandatory training program within the Office of Campaign Finance (OCF) to educate candidates for public office and the treasurers of political, exploratory, inaugural, transition and legal defense committees regarding campaign finance requirements. Currently OCF conducts voluntary training.

Councilmember McDuffie Introduces Legislation To Address Campaign Finance Reform and Improve the Quality Of Life For Ward 5 Residents
During the first legislative meeting of Council Period 20, Councilmember McDuffie introduced several bills tackling campaign finance reform, promoting economic development throughout the District and improving the quality of life for many of the city’s residents and.
The bills include measures that would limit money order contributions to 5 percent of the maximum an individual can contribute to a political candidate in the District, limiting the number of medical marijuana cultivation centers and dispensaries that may locate in a ward, and creating a distillery pub license. Councilmember McDuffie also re-introduced a bill requiring insurers to provide a written statement to homeowners is made, explaining that a standard homeowner’s insurance policy does not cover losses from flood and an explanation of how flood insurance may be obtained.
