Another Full and Energetic BACA Meeting

This is not an official recap, just some key issues discussed:

 

  1. 1.      Johnny Holiday, President – Mt. Lebanon Community Development Corporation announced that the 82 senior housing complex at the unit block of O St NW (in the former M.M. Washington School) is scheduled to open in November of 2013. House of Lebanon will begin taking applications for residents 55 years of age or older around August 2013.
  2. 2.      Mr. Tim Clark – Council Member McDuffie’s Office discussed the process by which Mundo Verde Charter School (grades K-8) was awarded the J.F. Cook building. Mr. Clark also shared that CM McDuffie oversees the Office of General Services and looking on how the Langston and Slater Schools should be redeveloped or at least maintained. The allocation of $5M to invest on the business development along N. Capitol St and Rhode Island is in the City Budget; CM McDuffie and his staff has been meeting with business and land owners along N. Capitol St to discuss ideas from store front improvements and other strategies to revitalize the corridor. An update on DOH’s plan to issue additional licenses to medical marijuana cultivation and dispensary centers before legislation can be passed to reduce the number of medical marijuana centers can open in Ward 5.
  3. 3.      Commissioner Teri Janine Quinn asked community to vote on Sunset Liquor’s request to have Voluntary Agreement amended to allow Sunset Liquors to apply for extension of hours to sell liquor on Sundays; the request was approved with no votes opposing the request. Commissioner provided several other updates. Commissioner Quinn also announced that the ANC will provide a $1,000 grant to each Civic Association to support the April 20th Community Clean Up.
  4. 4.      Commissioner Joyce Robinson-Paul provided several community updates.
  5. 5.      Scott Jacobs from Revive Catering discussed the mural to go up at 8 Florida Avenue NW. He is seeking community input on design and concepts.
  6. 6.      Officer from 5th District Police Department was present to address community concerns. The great news is that PSA 501 (our Police Service Area) has some of the best and lowest crime statistics.

  1. ANC 5E05 Commissioner also reported that after speaking with the founder of the Community Academy Public Charter School(CAPCS), it was confirmed that the school will no longer have 6th, 7th and 8th grader after the end of the school year. There is no plan to close this facility.

    Also on Tuesday, April 9th, the ANC 5E05 Single Member District meeting will feature, Assistant Chief Diane Groomes, who is interested in hearing from the residents on Public Safety and ideas on community policing. There will also be PSA 501 Officers to meet and greet neighbors in addition to Commander Solberg of the 5th District.
