In Weekly Radio Address, Mayor Gray Proposes Plans to Speed Reform of Public Education; Bill Would Expand Chartering Authority, Provide Additional Tools

Mayor Gray used his weekly radio address this week to describe legislation he is sending to the D.C. Council that would build on the District’s education reforms in a number of ways — including providing the Chancellor of the D.C. Public Schools (DCPS) with the power to authorize charter schools within the DCPS system. The bill also would make other changes to education laws that would provide DCPS and the District’s public charter schools with additional tools to improve education and respond to community needs.

“We’ve seen some major improvements in our schools,” said Mayor Gray. “But I want to see more gains, and I want to see them faster.”

The weekly broadcasts can be heard on All News 99.1-FM WNEW radio beginning at 10:05 a.m. each Sunday. Read the text of the June 2nd address here and listen to it here.
