Part of Our Neighborhood Go 2 Weeks with No Trash Pick Up

Dear Neighbors –

Please ensure to place a 311 request if your trash has not been collected. DPW has performed poorly and many areas of our neighborhood and Bloomingdale have gone 2 weeks without pick up.

If your block has been impacted, please ensure to place a 311 request, email Kevin Twine at DPW and copy our Councilmember and Mayor’s Liaison March Williams. I will be happy to provide you with any assistance you may need as well in having your requests escalated. Commissioner Teri Jenine-Thomas has been addressing the issue for her Single Member District.

Regards,

Geovani Bonilla

Mr. Twine –

Thank you for your response. I do sympathize that the weather has been less the warm and the flu season is prevalent, however, DPW’s performance is not acceptable. The snow and ice has not been of significant volumes to bring DPW to such a poor level of performance. What makes this more unacceptable is that I have friends in Wards 3 and 1 that have had trash collection bi-weekly these past two weeks.

The fact that other parts of the city had no issues with trash collection tells me that DPW had done an extremely poor job at managing what may be limited resources. Rather than having bi-weekly pick ups in some areas and leaving other areas without pick up for two weeks, crews could have been deployed and scheduled differently. What I see is a poor reallocation and adequate distribution throughout the City.

Councilmember McDuffy who is my councilmember and a member of the Committee on Transportation and the Environment as well as Committee Chair Mary Cheh are included in this communication and trust that they will address DPW’s performance.

I sincerely hope that the trash that is currently overflowing in the alleys is collected by close of business Friday, January 31 so that it stops creating a health hazard and attraction to rats and mice.

We are working well into the evening in an effort to overcome 2 weeks worth of snow and ice events and an outbreak of the flu that has hit our crews… and hit them hard!  We are still playing catch up… we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

Kevin

Subject: Misses trash collection for two weeks

Dear Mr Twine –

For the 2nd week, trash collection at the unit blocks of Bates and P St NW was missed by DPW. Trash pick up is in the alley between these streets.

The trash is overflowing after two weeks without collection and mice and rats are now more visible in the alley.

Please assist us with this matter.

Regards,

Geovani Bonilla
