BACA Recommendations for Inclusion in the Community Benefits Agreement

During a meeting held on Monday, April 7, 2014, the residents of the Bates Area Civic Association, Inc. made the following recommendation for inclusion in the McMillan Development Community Benefits Agreement:

1. Establishment of Neighborhood Beatification Fund to
a. Hire landscaping architect to design tree boxes along major corridors such as N. Capitol Street, First St NW, and Florida Avenue NW
b. Purchase plants and material to design the tree boxes
c. Hire DC Clean Team to:
i. Maintain tree boxes
ii. Water tree boxes
iii. Remove weeds and trash from tree boxes

2. Funding of complimentary shuttle service to connect the Truxton Circle Residents with the retail shops and recreation center at McMillan while minimizing traffic impact to our community. Regular schedule shuttle service from McMillan retail shopping and community recreation center with the following stops in Truxton Circle:
a. House of Lebanon Senior Housing Complex (Unit block of O St NW)
b. 3rd St and Q St NW (current metro bus stop)
c. 1st St and Florida Avenue Park
d. 1st St and P St NW

3. Establishment of Scholarship Fund for local high school students to receive the necessary college and/or vocational training to prepare for the employment opportunities at McMillan.

4. Establishment of paid Internship Program for local high school and college students to intern with employers at McMillan site.

5. $500,000 in Store Front Improvement Grants for small businesses along North Capitol Street, North Capitol Street and Florida Avenue that will be impacted by the new retail available at McMillan.

6. Support MAG and Bloomingdale Civic Association proposal to establish funds to operate recreation center, park and recreation activities.
