 Utility Relocation Near 3rd Street Tunnel Starts April 14, 2014

Construction Affects Massachusetts Avenue NW, H Street NW, 2nd Street NW and 3rd Street NW

(Washington D.C.) As part of the 3rd Street Tunnel project, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced that there will be utility relocations along Massachusetts Avenue NW and H Street NW—between 2nd Street and 4th Street NW—and along 2nd Street and 3rd Street NW, between E Street and Massachusetts Avenue NW.

This work will begin around Monday, April 14, 2014 with an expected completion time of nine months, weather permitting. Work will be conducted on weekdays, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Saturdays as needed.

In preparation for utility relocation work, repairs and roadway improvements contractors will: remove existing curbs and concrete islands, install temporary pedestrian walkways and ramps and install temporary streetlights and poles. Traffic control signs will be in place to guide travelers along the corridor and direct traffic to alternative routes when necessary.

During this phase of construction travelers can expect to see the following changes:

  • Restricted parking along H Street NW, between 3rd Street and Massachusetts Avenue NW;
  • Installation of temporary traffic barriers and pavement markings along Massachusetts Avenue and H Street NW—between 2nd Street and 4th Street NW— and along 2nd Street and 3rd Street NW, between E Street and Massachusetts Avenue NW;
  • Restricted pedestrian access, within construction work zone, to medians / islands at near the intersection of H Street and Massachusetts Avenue NW;
  • Georgetown University Shuttle Bus stop at 2nd Street and F Street NW will be relocated to 1st Street and E Street NW; and
  • Eastbound and westbound Metrobus (for example, the X2 and 80 buses) stops on H Street NW between 2nd Street and 3rd Street NW will be eliminated. For additional information concerning Metrobus routes and schedules, please contact 202-637-7000.

Motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists are urged to stay alert and use caution when traveling through the work zone.

Motorists are advised to plan for additional travel time in the area as traffic delays are likely to occur, or to use alternative routes to bypass the construction area.
