DC Students Required to Tap Their DC One Cards on Metrobus and DC Circulator by April 30 for Kids Ride Free on Bus Program

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) School Transit Subsidy Program and WMATA (Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority) would like to remind District students to register their DC One Card and activate their Kids Ride Free on Bus electronic pass according to the schedule published by DDOT.

Students who attend schools beginning with the letters A-K should register their DC One Cards now, wait three business days, and then tap their DC One Card on the Smartrip target on the bus.

  • Students who attend schools beginning with the letters L-O should register their DC One Cards now, wait three business days, and TAP their DC One Card on the Smartrip target on the bus on April 24.
  • Students who attend schools beginning with the letters P-Z, should also register their DC One Cards now but wait until April 28 to TAP their DC One Card on the bus.

If any student misses their deadline, then they can always register their DC One Card at the earliest opportunity, wait three business days, and TAP their Card on the bus.

By April 30, WMATA will require all students to “tap” their individual DC One Card on the farebox target to board the bus for FREE during weekdays only, from 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

For bus travel during non-FREE hours and weekends, students should put money on their card, purchase a 10-trip bus pass, student tokens or a monthly pass from the Metro Sales Office with their DC One Card eligibility letter or a buy a discounted DC student transit pass on-line at www.wmata.com/smartrip through a registered SmarTrip® online account, linked to the student’s DC One Card.
