Tomorrow: Nerds in NoMa
Don’t put your pocket protector away just yet, because there are still two more ‘Nerds in NoMa‘ events this year! Tomorrow night, stop by The Lobby Project (1200 First Street, NE) for ‘Nerds in NoMa: Next in NoMa,’ to explore exciting future retail development in NoMa. Speakers at ‘Next in NoMa’ include:

Free beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for the over 21 crowd, and Federal City Brothers will have sausages and brats available for purchase. This event is free and open to the public, but please RSVP online here.

Celebrate National Earmuffs Day at Moe’s
Did you know that this Friday, March 13, is National Earmuffs Day? To most of the world, this means wearing your most outrageous, furry earmuffs. Moe’s Southwest Grill is celebrating by offering its famous burrito bowl, appropriately called “The Earmuff,” for only $5. Small Business Workshop at NOMA Workspaces
The Small Business Administration and NOMA Workspaces are hosting a free, small business workshop on Tuesday, March 10 from 8:30-11 AM. Speakers at the workshop include David White from Wells Fargo Bank, Polina Bakhteiarov and Sandra Gomez from the Great Streets Grant Program, Shara A. Gibson from the DC Department of Small and Local Business Development Program, and Alexandra Piotrowski from the Small Business Administration.

NOMA Workspaces provides virtual offices, co-working spaces, meeting rooms and private offices for start-ups, entrepreneurs, non-profit organizations and more. Synchronicity in Concert at NPR
Head over to NPR on March 20 for a free evening concert featuring the musical group Synchronicity. Synchronicity’s music is described as a blend of classical string and flute instrumentation with African-based percussion. Doors open at 6 PM, and the concert begins at 7 PM. NPR’s headquarters is located at 1111 North Capitol Street, NE. A reserved ticket is required. Seating is first come, first served. Click here for more information and to reserve a ticket.

 

Road Closures on March 14
The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and Half Marathon comes to DC in a few weeks, which will cause several road closures in the area. On Saturday, March 14, from 7 AM-12:15 PM, expect closures in NoMa along the following roads:

  • North Capitol Street from Bryant Street, NW to K Street, NE
  • K Street, NE from North Capitol to Fourth Street, NE
  • Fourth Street, NE from K Street to H Street, NE

Community Events and Updates
ANC 6C Meeting Wednesday
The Advisory Neighborhood Commission 6C (ANC6C) will host its monthly, full-committee meeting this Wednesday, March 11 at 7 PM. The meeting will take place at The Heritage Foundation (214 Massachusetts Avenue, NE). Click here to view the agenda for this Wednesday’s meeting.

Eckington Neighborhood Cleanups
Join the Eckington Civic Association on the third Saturday of every month for neighborhood cleanups. The next neighborhood cleanup will take place on Saturday, March 21 from 10 AM – Noon at the Harry Thomas Senior Recreation Center  (1743 Lincoln Road, NE).

Events at Union Market This Week

  • Boogie Babes (March 11, 10:30 AM): A live music performance for kids and their grownups!
  • Test Kitchen (March 11, 6-8 PM): Get to know your favorite Union Market vendors a little better with this weekly, interactive demo series. Each week, a different vendor will host an educational workshop from now until April. This week’s demonstration will be from DC Dosa.
  • Barre 3 Community Series (March 13, 12-1 PM): Spring is almost here and Barre 3 is here to help you get moving and shake off the winter blues. Participate in pop-up community classes every Friday from now until April.

Northwest One Library Free Events

Northwest One Library (155 L Street, NW) hosts free events and workshops that are open to the public. Click here to see Northwest One Library’s full calendar. Upcoming events include:

  • Computer Basics (March 10 & March 12, 7 PM): Learn parts of the computer, mouse basics, typing, Internet search tools and more in this twice-weekly course provided by ByteBack. Registration for this course is required.
  • Baby/Toddler Story Time (March 11, 10 AM): Stories, songs and flannel boards for children ages 3 and younger. Daycare groups and individuals with children are welcome.
  • Early Literacy Workshop (March 15, 2:30 PM): Join this interactive presentation and learn the skills your children need to be ready to learn to read. This workshop is for parents and caregivers of children ages birth to five.
  • Board Game Afternoon (March 15, 3 PM): Stop in on Sunday afternoons to play fun board games and learn chess.
