DC Property Tax Assesment

I got my DC property tax assessment and am wondering what others think about this?  My property value went up even though it seems all property values should be dropping.  I am wondering if I should challenge it.  Do you have any thoughts?

  1. I have read my Notice of Proposed Real Property Assessment For Tax Year 2010 several times and I still don’t completely get it. Here are the points I do like about it: 1) My Proposed (Tax Year 2010) Assessed Value is lower than this years. I like that b/c next year I will pay less (right?). 2) My Estimated Taxable Assessments are about 50% of my Assessed Value. Looks good, BUT since the property was sold to a new owner (me) several years back (in da housing boom) I am being taxed based upon the higher Assessed Value. Let’s call the Estimated $200K and the Assessed $420K. The value in between is how much I was gouged by the guy who flipped the house onto me. 3) The Homestead Benefit SEEMS to bring it down to $400k as the basis for how I am taxed. Ok, sounds cool. BUT, the Readl Property Tax Bill states Assessment $420K, with a 2009 First Half tax bill due Mar 31st. In the end, I will most likely not contest this year’s tax bill that will be paid by me. Why, b/c I don’t understand Fenty-Math. I will ‘try’ to make a hobby out of learning how to fight the upward trend of my tax bill.
