The Loss of Truxton Circle at NCap & Florida Ave

This was on the Bloomingdale email list:

From a Florida Avenue NW resident:

I can’t help commenting on the Sunday post regarding Truxton Circle (http://www.princeofpetworth.com/2009/06/reader-finds-remnants-of-truxton-circle/), and why it was lost.

What was lost was more than beauty.  North Capitol Street, just like what the Southeast Freeway did in Boston, has bifurcated neighborhoods.  Transportation priorities ruled and the surrounding neighborhoods decayed.  Where there were trees, there are now gas stations.  Where there was grass, there is now pavement and concrete.

Truxton Circle, as it now exists, is nothing short of ugly.  Boston spent billions of dollars on the big dig to eliminate the freeway so that neighborhoods would be rejoined and rejuvenated.  As I recall, the cost of the big dig was running at about $1 million per day for several years.  Someone wrote that it would cost 3.7 million to restore Truxton Circle.  A very paltry amount in comparison.  If the restored Truxton Circle was half as beautiful as the original, increased property values would pay for the improvement very quickly in the form of tax revenue.  Our neighborhood is becoming a good place to live despite the inattention given to it by the city.  With the right infrastructure, we could have a great neighborhood.

  1. I agree with Caryn. With the homeless and others who populate that corner, something needs to be done, Nobody cares and would accept this in their neighborhood.
