Neighbors,
Although we could have had better weather and a bigger turnout, I would like to thank all those who participated in our clean-up on August 22. At 9:45am, we planned on canceling the event due to the weather but by 10:15am, we had about 12 neighbors, including the Deacon of the Metropolitan Baptist Church, out cleaning up refusing to cancel!
We went down P, Q, Bates, 3rd, and 1st Streets and filled about 20 trash bags. Not bad for 2 hours!
Special thanks to DC Helping Hands and Inspector Captoria Kyle for even showing up to see how we were progressing. Kaptoria is a true friend to the Bates Area!
Stay tuned for our next event. Any suggestions??
Pete and Anita
thanks to you for all your planning and hard work. Maybe we should do fewer but bigger events? Seems to be a few neighbors sharing the neighborly responsibility for all at these clean up efforts. What shall be our strategy? Better yet, how do we get folks to not throw their trash out to begin with! thanks again.
Do you think the city would provide/install some anti-littering signage? There is an area on my block where youngsters congregate after school, and no matter how often I clean it up, it is constantly littered with candy wrappers, chip bags and soda bottles. I wonder if a sign might make them think twice about dropping trash on the ground.
Wish I had known it wasn’t cancelled. In terms of getting youth not to litter- let’s try to involve them in the clean ups!
I absolutely think that’s a spot on idea. It would motivate me to be out there working with kids from neighboring school. I really would like us to engage CAPCS, Dunbar and even Kipp.
