A member of the Eckington listserv asked readers to send Ward 5 Coucilmember Harry Thomas telling him your views on same-sex marriage, as it appears that a bill will be introduced in the near future on the issue and both sides are gathering their forces to lobby the issue. I wrote to Thomas and below is his response.

I have been steadfast in my position on marriage equity and invite you to review my record on the issue and encourage those who have a position on marriage equity to speak up on the issue. I also welcome dialogue on any issue that residents have which is why i have councilmember on your corner sessions and a host of outreach activities for resident feedback which can be found on my wesite harrythomas5.com
I must have missed it, what is CM Thomas’ position on gay marriage? It’s a simple question requiring a simple answer. So tell us Councilman, will you support marriage equality or not when legislation comes up in the council?
Seems to me he’s saying he does support marriage equality.
Harry Thomas said this on the Eckington listserv:
I sent you an email earlier but thought I would respond to this as well. My position has not changed however I have not been afforded the opportunity to see the full and final draft of the bill and do not sign my name to legislation until I have that opportunity. I also see this as an opportunity to unite our ward on this issue if we all work together and I still stand by my position on marriage equity and will continue to do so. thanks for your email and I look forward to working with you.
Harry
According to the article in the Washington Post on Friday about the marriage bill he was listed as one of the councilmembers that hadn’t announced their support. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/09/10/AR2009091004414.html)
I don’t think we’ll really know where he stands until he votes.
He’s speaking tonight at the BACA meeting. Let’s ask him. I should do some research on this bill today. Send forward if you have it.
