North Capitol Main Street Launches CLEAN AND SAFE SENTINELS
Program brings cleaning and maintenance services to North Capitol Area
Dear Residents, Business Owners and Community Partners;
In October, 2009 NCMS competed for and was awarded $125,000 in grant funding to bring a cleaning and maintenance program to the North Capitol business community. We are happy to announce the program is finally underway and you will begin to notice significant physical improvements to your neighborhood business corridors very soon.
Already — last week during the inaugural kick-off — the team worked on weed abatement and mulching; they used 113 bags of mulch and covered all the tree boxes in the service area; they collected 256 bags of trash and leaves; they mulched and cleaned the pocket park and were pleasantly surprised when some of the loiterers helped load bags into the truck! The team reports that more people are using the trash receptacles.
Going forward the team will work together in a group of three to sweep and collect trash, making at least two (2) sweeps through the entire service area each day.
We are so pleased that the program has begun and we urge residents to help NCMS make this program a complete success by sharing your comments and making suggestions on how we can improve in any area. We believe it’s going to take a united effort — coordination with the business community, police, social services and residents — to make the program a model of success and each resident can do his or her part by being invested in the idea of a clean and safe community.
Sincerely, Pat Ellis Mitchell, President
Business Owners Anticipate Benefits of Program
Business owners Mr. Abeje, of Windows Cafe and Mr. Momenian of City Gear joined NCMS’s President, Pat Mitchell along with Patty Brosmer, President Ready Willing and Working, service provider, to kick off the first-of-its-kind program for the North Capitol Street Business area. “I’m glad about the added services NCMS will bring. I believe it will benefit businesses in the area”, says Mr. Abeje of Windows Cafe.
Staying focused on and committed to bringing services that improve the commercial/retail environment along North Capitol Street and First Street is North Capitol’s primary objective for the first quarter of 2010. Look for more services and programs in the coming months.

Thanks for the update, I’ve really noticed the difference on North Capitol street where it intersects with P Street. It’s an important step toward fixing the general sense of dysfuncation that afflicts much of NCap.
