Big Show Saturday

The annual Artists Writers and Entertainers event, timed for Black History Month, will be held this coming Saturday, Feb. 27, at St. George’s Episcopal Church, 160 U St. NW. Show starts at 1 p.m.

This year’s A.W.E. promises to be extra-special. Our longtime neighbor Gloria Jolivet, who spent years as a backup singer with the great Bo Diddley, will talk about her years on the road with Bo: touring in a Dick Clark road show, taking the stage at the Howard Theater, joining the Chicago blues scene…and more.

Gloria was part of a glorious era in American music, and she’s still performing regularly. I believe she may sing for us as well.

From a younger generation, another neighbor master drummer Al Warren, a veteran of the DC music scene, will perform with his group “Swag Funk.” Maybe they’ll even join up with Gloria…could happen.

All in all, a rare opportunity and a show not to be missed.

    1. Caryn,
You’re completely correct. This is a BACA event. Mary Ann originated this event, and she and Jim are the key organizers, blizzard and other events notwithstanding. Thanks for pointing this out.
