Cook School Update

From ANC5c02 Commissioner Sylvia Pinkney:

1. The YouthBuild Public Charter School made a request to the District of Columbia Charter School Board (PSCB) to operate in a new location, John F. Cook Elementary School, 30 P Street NW. The request is on the PSCB’s April, 19, 2010 meeting agenda.

During each board meeting twenty minutes are set aside for community participation. Each participant is allowed two minutes to speak. I need at least eight residents to step forward and represent the community. All interested parties must contact me by Monday, April 12that 202-208-2817 (work) 202-269-4180 (home) or spinkney .

I delivered copies of the ANC 5C’s letter, resolutions and petition to the PSCB to be included as testimony in opposition to the YouthBuild Public Charter School’s request to operate in the John F. Cook Elementary School.

2. I was recently notified of the District of Columbia Department of Real Estates intention to enter into a long-term lease for the John F. Cook Elementary School with the Latin American Youth Center/YouthBuild Public Charter School. However, the lease cannot be sanctioned without the approval of the District of Columbia City Council.

The lease package is in the office of Councilman Gray and at some point in the next month or two will be placed on the Council’s agenda. I delivered copies of the ANC 5C’s letter, resolutions and petition to be included as testimony in opposition to the long-term lease, to Christopher Murray, Committee Clerk, Committee of the Whole, Office of Chairman Vincent C. Gray for distribution to all Council members.

I’ll provide an additional update once the John F. Cook Elementary School lease is placed on the Council’s agenda. This will be the community’s last opportunity to offer testimony in opposition to this project.

Councilman Thomas is with us on this issue. However, we as a community must make a show of force to provide him the support he needs to represent our community.

Sylvia M. Pinkney, ANC 5C02
