BACA Block Captain Program

We are fortunate to live in ward with the top performing Metropolitan Police Department (MPD5). Neighborhood involvement in the prevention, reporting and fighting crime is essential for a neighborhood to continue to thrive and prosper. An active and involved neighborhood is the best weapon in crime prevention.

The Bates Area Civic Association is initiating a Block Captain Program. This program consists of an organized manner in which neighbors communicate with other neighbors in their blocks regarding potential threats, crimes in progress, and other emergencies. Each block consists of a Block Captain that secures and maintains a contact list for each block resident. In the event of an emergency, crime in progress or crime alert, the Block Captain communicates the threat to each block resident. The Block Captain keeps each contact list private and secure; it is only used for urgent matters and never for solicitation, telemarketing or fund raising.

Block Captains and neighbors will also participate in meetings with Metropolitan Police Department, initiate and participate in developing and implementing safety programs and measures. Block Captain training is provided for all neighbors involved in the project. Neighborhood social events are part of a way for neighbors to meet neighbors, develop neighborhood networks and contacts.

For more information regarding this program, please contact Geovani Bonilla via email at mrgeovani@aol.com or attend one of the informational meetings on Tuesday, May 18th or Wednesday, May 19th at 7:00 PM. Meeting location is 89 P ST NW.
