Every year (or so), the Bates Area Civic Association sponsors Flower Power 2010 – a beautification project for our East Shaw neighborhood. Visit https://batesareacivicassociation.org/flowerpower/ for more info and for the link to the nomination form.
How it works
Neighbors nominate their or their neighbors’ yards. The Flower Power Committee will narrow down the nominations, and on June 26, we will hold a Garden Walk where neighbors go to each of the nominated houses and vote for the most beautiful gardens. A recognition ceremony will be held at a subsequent Bates Area Civic Association meeting, and nominated yards will have a small marker that will proudly indicate their yard was selected.
If you’d like to participate in the Garden Tour on June 26, tickets for the walk will be sold for $5. The committee will also be seeking sponsorships from local businesses. Any funds raised will go into future community beautification efforts.
Nominations
You can nominate yourself, your neighbor, or your whole block.
The categories this year are:
- Best Large/Medium Yard,
- Best Small Yard,
- Best Back Yard, and
- Best Block
The idea is that we work individually and as a community to make our East Shaw neighborhood beautiful and in the process we work with and get to know our neighbors. We hope you’ll participate.

What prizes are available?
Well, along the way, we get the prize of finding a more beutiful neighborhood and getting to know more neighbors, helping someone else prettify their yard, and forming a tighter community. That’s a pretty big prize. And yes, there’ll also be recognition given for our category winners. This is TBD. Stay tuned.
