Please don’t block the Gage-Eckington park construction

Neighbors, I request that you all support this park’s construction, which will include a dog park, a playground, benches and gardens. They’ve already raised the school that was there and Marion Barry’s actions will leave a big empty hole. Here’s the letter I sent to CM Barry.

Thanks,
Caryn

Subject: Please don’t block the Gage-Eckington park construction

Dear Councilman Barry —

I live on 3rd St NW and I am writing to ask you to immediately withdraw your disapproval resolution for the construction of the park at Gage-Eckington, which is about 10 minutes walk from my house. We are very disappointed and confused that you submitted such a resolution, especially with no explanation.

We have awaited the completion with anticipation. Currently, there is an empty field, that could be used for productive community use. There is no park in our neighborhood, and this proposed park is an exciting and long-anticipated addition.

There are many arguments as to why this park moving forward is an imperative for this community:

· Access to green space for children and families in the area is limited and this provides a great opportunity to change that.

· The park sits in the center of our community and will connect all parts of the community, all ages, bringing folks together as never before.

· The Kelly Miller apartments (many with families and children) sit adjacent to the park which would provide a safe place for them to play.

· Security: right now we have a 3 acre pit that is an eyesore and security issue for the community. Getting this park built increases the safety of all residents

· Community Spirit. LeDroit Park and Bloomingdale residents have worked too long and hard in the last 2+ years to see the site turned into a positive community use. Brining this project to completion is a testament to all those who worked hard to see this park happen.

We are very upset by your resolution, and we ask that you immediately withdraw it.

Sincerely,
Caryn Nesmith
3rd St NW resident.
