Pepco Warns Customers about Credit Card Scam

January 13, 2012

Pepco is warning its customers to be vigilant about protecting their personal information as more than 22 customers have reported a scam involving prepared “Green Dot” Visa credit cards. The Company has stated customers reported receiving calls from individuals claiming to represent Pepco, informing them that their service is scheduled to be disconnected and they should make a payment by purchasing a “Green Dot” Visa card to avoid this action. Then customers are told to call another number so that additional information can be obtained and the monetary value taken from the credit card.

The Office of the People’s Counsel for the District of Columbia advises consumers to be cautious of calls or emails requesting personal or account information. In a recent Press Release regarding this matter, Pepco informed its customers that, “Customer Service Representatives will always be able to provide the name on the account, the account address, and the exact past due balance. If the caller cannot provide that information, it is very likely the call is not from a Pepco employee.”

If you suspect that you have been a target of this scam or any other utility related scam, please contact OPC at 202.727.3071 and one of our Consumer Outreach Specialist can assist you with resolving the matter. Additionally, you should call local law enforcement agencies to report fraudulent activity.

  1. It would have been nice if PEPCO informed DC residents that they recently filed with the Public Service Commission for a $42 million dollar rate increase. PEPCO also could have informed residents about the Public Hearings available so that DC residents could testify or file comments. FYI PEPCO’s CEO just received a 6 million dollar annual compensated salary raise.
