What Do YOU Want to Read?

Hi all! This is my first post here, so to cover some brief “About Me’s” – I have lived here for a little less than 3 years, moving in right after undergrad at the University of Maryland. I live on the 100 block of Q Street and have probably been seen at some point by almost all of you working on my laptop at BBC.

In my short time here, I’ve been converted into a Bates/Truxton/Hanover/East Shaw-area booster and hope to post here frequently. I’ll go ahead and start with something maybe a little unusual, though: two requests.

First, I volunteer for an area nonprofit that could use a few more helping hands, called 826DC. We’re based in Columbia Heights but work with students from throughout the district, offering after-school homework help and a variety of creative writing workshops, all from our unique “storefront” – the Museum of Unnatural History. All our programs are free and staffed entirely by volunteers.¬† With ambitious goals for the new year, we’re working hard to recruit new volunteer tutors, event planners, museum “docents” and more. Interested? Check us out online or shoot me an email.

Second, I want to know what you all would like to read here. Stories about your neighbors? Historical digging? More about local politics? I’ve got a couple of ideas, but I’m open to any and all suggestions, so fire away!

Thanks for your time and I look forward to the conversations!

  1. Thanks Brian for your initiative. I think one very interesting topic would be interviewing local business owners, which would help us get to know them and promote their businesses. In turn, that helps the area grow. You could start with the businesses that is trying to open at 3rd and Florida (check out previous posts and the Facebook page), or the owner of the Old Bates Market at 3rd and P St NW – i have his contact and he has a new person leasing the space but it is still not open. Or you could talk to the owners of the market at 3rd and Q St NW – I think they are Ethiopian, but I don’t know much about them. Or the owner of Beau Thai – nice woman and I’d love to know more about her background. the owners of the new Uncle Chips, Boundary Stone, etc.

  2. Good idea Caryn. I would love to hear more about the plans of local business owners, and perhaps a forum for residents to provide feedback to the business owners of how they might increase business within the community (preferred products, services to offer, etc.).

I would love to see a write-up on Catania Bakery on North Capitol Street.

    Nice initiative, Brian.

  3. Thanks for the ideas, everyone! That’s close enough to consensus for me, and works with what I was thinking, so…mission accepted, I guess. I’ll try to have new items up every few weeks or so.

And Jon – I meant Big Bear Cafe, not British Broadcasting Corp.! Sorry for the confusion! I’m especially sorry because I’m sure that lowers your expectations of what I’ll post here an awful lot.
