Law Enacted Clarifying Firearms Registration Renewal Requirements

(Washington, DC)- On Sunday, March 18, 2012, Mayor Vincent C. Gray signed the Firearms Registration Renewal Amendment Emergency Act of 2012. This amendment to the firearms registration law makes clear that no resident with a lawfully registered firearm will be required to renew the firearms registration before January 1, 2014. No valid firearms registration will expire before 2014.

The Council of the District of Columbia will be voting on broad parameters of the new registration system in April.  Once these are approved, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) will develop the systems and processes for registration renewal.  In 2013, MPD will publish detailed regulations to inform current firearms registrants how they will be able to renew their registration beginning in 2014.
