Subject: Special ANC5C Meeting-Best One Liquor Renewal Application

Good Afternoon All:

I have asked Chairman Ronnie Edwards to call a special meeting of ANC5C for next Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at 6:30 pm.  The meeting will be held at the Community Academy Public Charter School (CAPCS) just before the Medical Marijuana Dispensary joint SMD Meeting of ANC5C01 and ANC5C02.  At the special ANC5C meeting, I will be asking the Commission to file a protest against the application of Best One Liquor for a 3 year liquor license renewal.

For the record, I understand that Best One Liquors has been a relatively good neighbor, maintaining a clean store and providing quality service.  The reason I will be asking the ANC to file a protest is to preserve the community’s right to negotiate and file a voluntary agreement with the store’s owner(s) with regard to some of the concerns expressed by the neighbors who live near the store (at 322 Florida Avenue, N.W.), concerns that may include improved signage, loitering controls, etc.

The protest period for Best One ends on May 7, 2012, the day before the next regularly scheduled meeting of ANC5C.  If no protest is filed by that date (May 7th), we lose the right to hold the store owners to the terms of any voluntary agreement that may be drafted.  A protest may also be filed by any group of 5 or more residents of the neighborhood so if you have specific concerns or points you would like to appear in a volutary agreement with Best One, please let me know by e-mail or come to the special meeting on May 1st, or both.

Please pass this message along to other neighbors, particularly those who live in close proximity to Best One Liquors.  If you have neighbors who don’t use e-mail, please print out a copy of this notice and deliver it to them.

Thanks.

  1. There is money in the ANC5C budget for printing flyers and having neighbors to pass them out.
Also, why not post flyers on lamp post or have businesses display them in their business, so that people who do not have access to email, new neighbors, and everybody who is interested, know about the various public ANC5C meetings. An informed and engaged community is vital to an improved and thriving neighborhood.

  2. Fliers are not the be all, end all that one might think they are. Given the short turn-around in publicizing this meeting, organizing fliers and volunteers to deliver is a challenge. I have experienced this first hand. It might be worth while to take a variation on the block captain method, here. One or two homes on each block share the work to ensure an entire neighborhood is informed.

  3. So this protest is just so that the comunity can enter into a voluntary agreement with the store owners? This is not about trying to deny them a new license?

I just want to make sure what we are doing here. I live around the corner from Best One and shop there often. They have a nice beer selection with decent prices. I really enjoy the convenience and service they provide.
