Wal-Mart squeezes its offerings into urban-style box on H Street

When it opens to the public Wednesday, the Wal-Mart in downtown D.C. will have pretty much the same stuff as every other Wal-Mart in the country — it’ll just have a little less of it.
The 73,000-square-foot store at 99 H St. NW is a small one for the company, whose stores typically start at 90,000 square feet. The other D.C. Wal-Mart opening Wednesday, at 5929 Georgia Ave. NW, is much more typical, coming in at 103,000 square feet.
Eric Quist, store manager, said the H Street store opening is the most exciting one he’s been involved in, mainly because the company’s urban concept is still relatively untested.
“We’re kind of the guinea pig, the test box, and they selected here to start it,” he said. “But they’re going to expand this up in other stores.”
