BoomHangers is an arts project space & studio with a focus on unique collaborations across disciplines and cultures. Co-founded by DJ Natty Boom & visual artist Lisa Marie Thalhammer while on sabbatical in Peru, BoomHammer hosts creative events & artists in residence at the 52 O Street Artist Studios in Washington DC.

The afternoon of Sunday January 26, 2014, from 3-6pm, BoomHammer will host a one-day exhibition of paintings by emerging Peruvian artist Ana Balcázar Bartra. These giant canvases of landscapes and bedscapes create dream-like sequences, bringing to mind issues of identity, feminism and the subconscious. Evoking references from Latin American women artists throughout history, such as Frida Kahlo and Ana Mendieta, the artist uses her own figure as subject, painting herself life-size and nude upon used flowered bed sheets. With the flower pattern revealed in a variety of translucencies, her figure hovers within mirrored frames over picturesque surreal landscapes of her home country. Salt flats unique to Peru and Bolivia are depicted in wide monochromatic brush strokes, referencing the mysticism of her homeland, which was an inspiration to BoomHammer during their recent sabbatical in Peru.
To accompany this exhibition event of paintings by Peruvian artist Ana Balcázar Bartra, BoomHammer resident artists will also exhibit their talent. Cumbia, Go-Go and electronic beats will be played by DJ Natty Boom, and the studios of visual artists Lisa Marie Thalhammer and Thom Flynn will be open for viewing. Additionally, brunch time refreshments will be available.

This one time in Peru
June 15th was Lisa Marie’s birthday, and we decided to go out on Lake Titicaca for the day. It’s the largest lake in South America, beautiful and very high in altitude. One of the first set of islands are the floating islands of the Uros people. We spent the afternoon there and learned from el Presidente of one of the 42 islands.
