D.C. charter board delays vote on revocation for Community Academy
The D.C. Public Charter School Board delayed a vote that was scheduled for Thursday morning about whether to revoke the charter for a network of city schools amid allegations that its founder diverted millions of dollars to a private management company for his own financial gain.
The board voted unanimously in December to begin revocation proceedings for Dorothy I. Height Community Academy Public Charter Schools, one of the city’s oldest and largest charter schools, for demonstrating a pattern of fiscal mismanagement. Board members said they intended to make a decision in time for students to apply to other schools through the citywide enrollment lottery, which closes in March.
The vote was rescheduled for Feb. 19.

D.C. Charter School Board revokes charter for Community Academy
The D.C. Public Charter School Board voted Thursday morning to revoke the charter of Dorothy I. Height Community Academy Public Charter School, citing fiscal mismanagement.
School founder Kent Amos has been charged with diverting millions of dollars from the school to a private management company for his own financial benefit. A Superior Court judge in October ordered that payments to the management company stop. The operators can continue to run the school through June 30.
Jennifer Niles, deputy mayor for education, released a transition plan for next school year in an open letter to parents and guardians at the school.
