Luciana Cafe – out of business

Cross post from Eckington listserv:

I’m sad to report that Luciana Cafe has closed. Frank had talked about the landlord raising the rent and that this would probably force him to shutdown. This was the first of the “wave” of restaurants in the area that we would visit and the only one that we used regularly.

The issue of lease rates and asking prices of properties along North Capitol St has been raised by individuals on this listserv before. I do not know how much Frank’s landlord was asking, but for a property that had windows repeatedly broken, ATM vandalized, loiters inside (which is why Frank removed the tables) and outside of the restaurant, a raise in rent from the previous year is a highly questionable move.

  1. This is a real shame. Luciana’s did a fine job in tough surroundings. They’re nice people, and I’m sorry to see them forced out. The rent-raising is highly disturbing and I’m hoping that someone who understands the Washington real estate game better than I do can point to what’s going on.
