MPD Camp for BACA children

5th District Citizens Advisory Committee President Robert Brannum spoke at the last civic association meeting about a two week sleepaway camp in the summer for children that is run by DC’s MPD and the Boys and Girls Club. The idea is to expose kids that grow up in the urban environment to a positive experience outside of the city.  The program organizers would like to target at-risk youth and give them a fun learning alternative during the summer months.  The program is subsidized, costing $100 per child for the entire two-week program. Please read about it below and consider identifying and/or sponsoring local youths in our area that would benefit from this program.

Established in 1937, Camp Brown is located in Scotland, Maryland near Point Lookout in St. Mary’s County. Camp Brown is owned and operated by Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington and serves boys and girls ages 7 to 13, who are residents of the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. The 168-acre camp, along the widest section of the Potomac River, serves approximately 1,000 boys and girls during the summer camping season.

For over 70 years, Camp Brown has provided youngsters the opportunity to escape the bustle and heat of the city to enjoy a weeklong adventure in the countryside. Often the trip to Camp Brown is their first experience traveling outside the city. The youngsters experience the joy of a relaxing, waterfront setting and engage in structured and well-supervised programs and activities. The curriculum covers a variety of topics that nurture and re-enforce self-awareness, self-esteem, character and constructive decision-making.

  1. Greetings,

Just a couple of corrections for the first paragraph: our registration fee is $150 for DC residents and $225 for non-residents. This fee is per child, per one-week session.

    Thank you,
