“Ready Your Wheels Day” Set for May 15

Note: Our neighbors to the west in Shaw are helping to sponsor this.

In honor of National Bike Month and in advance of this year’s annual Bike to Work Day on May 21, several local organizations are teaming up to distribute free bicycle helmets and lights to District residents, as well as provide free repairs and safety advice.

“Ready Your Wheels Day” is a joint community effort with 5th Street Ace Hardware, the Convention Center Community Association (CCCA), the Metropolitan Police Department’s First District, the Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District, the Mount Vernon Square Neighborhood Association (MVSNA), and the Washington Area Bicycle Association (WABA).

Representatives from these organizations and The Bike House, a community-based bicycle repair coop, will be on hand to distribute these free items and talk to cyclists about bike safety, cycling for kids and families, and the health benefits and low cost of getting around the city on a bike.

“Bicycle safety is especially important in urban areas where many use bikes as their main mode of transportation,” said Evans. “I appreciate the efforts of these groups to promote bike safety and provide these items and services to those who may not have the means to get them otherwise.”

The event will take place on Saturday, May 15 from 12:00-4:00 pm at the 5th Street Ace Hardware, located at 1055 5th Street, NW (CityVista). Residents must have their bicycle with them in order to receive the free items.
