Update: Traffic Pattern Changes at New York Avenue and Florida Avenue Intersection Postponed One Week

Implementation Now Scheduled for Friday, June 11

(Washington, D.C.) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) now plans to implement traffic pattern changes at the New York Avenue and Florida Avenue intersection on Friday, June 11, 2010. The changes were originally scheduled to take effect on Friday, June 4, but DDOT is postponing them to complete traffic signal timing alterations and other technical adjustments. Crews will start the work at 9 pm on June 11, weather permitting.

DDOT is making major safety improvements in the busy intersection, which also includes First Street, NE and Eckington Place. After the adjustments are made next Friday, traffic will flow in a circular pattern around the intersection (see the updated diagram below).

With the new traffic patterns:

• First Street, NE will become one way southbound from Florida Avenue to New York Avenue.
• Florida Avenue will be limited to one way traffic westbound between O Street and First Street, NE.
• Eastbound Florida Avenue traffic will be detoured to First Street. From there, drivers can go left at New York Avenue and right on O Street to return to Florida Avenue. (**Please note: this is a change from the original detour route announced last week.)
• Northbound First Street traffic wishing to access westbound New York or Florida Avenues will be temporarily detoured via M and Third Streets, NE.
• Southbound Eckington Place traffic will no longer be allowed to turn left on Florida Avenue. Eckington traffic will use First Street to reach New York Avenue and eastbound Florida Avenue,

Drivers and cyclists will need to pay close attention to the posted signs, lane markings and new traffic signals. Pedestrians are also urged to use caution and follow marked detours routes around the construction zones.

The $3 million reconfiguration of the intersection is designed to improve circulation and decrease accidents. The project is scheduled to be completed in August and final traffic pattern changes will be announced at that time.
