Mr. Terry Bellamy
Interim Director
District Department of Transportation
2000 14th Street, NW, Sixth Floor

Dear Mr. Bellamy:

Please accept this correspondence as an urgent request, plea, and letter of support to address the need for installation of speed bumps in the 100 and 200 blocks of P Street, NW.

As you know, the Dorothy I. Height Community Academy Public Charter School is located at 1400 First Street, NW, at the intersections of First Street and P Street.  The safety of our children is at risk, especially during arrival at 8:00 am and dismissal at 4:00 PM, largely due to the disregard for safe speed limits by motorists traveling along P Street.  I, along with others on my staff, have regularly witnessed vehicles traveling far in excess of the 25 mile per hour speed limit on P Street.  Additionally, parents have expressed concern for the safety of their children who must cross P Street when walking to and from school.

We are soliciting your help in facilitating the school’s and community’s request for installing speed bumps on P Street.  I know that one of your missions, as well as ours, is to ensure that our young people are afforded a safe and secure environment to and from school each day.  I anticipate that your approval of this request will greatly improve the safety of our children.

Thank you for your attention and consideration.  Should you require additional information, please feel free to contact me at 202-234-5368.

Sincerely,

Erma Jean Jefferson
