The Historic Preservation Review Board recently designated the Margaret Murray Washington School, 27 O St. NW, a landmark for the D.C. Inventory of Historic Sites. The building will eventually house 82 units of affordable housing.
The school was originally known as the O Street Vocational School. The main block was built in 1912 from plans by D.C. municipal architect Snowden Ashford. It was renamed in 1926 for the former Tuskegee Institute teacher and widow of Tuskegee founder Booker T. Washington.
Development will be partially funded through federal rehabilitation tax credits. The building is to retain its basic floor plan and many interior features and trim. For information, go to planning.dc.gov.
Who will inform the homeless lady that sleeps there night and day trying to keep dry and warm.
