Up to 11 people shot on D.C. street corner overnight
By Peter Hermann, Monday, March 11, 7:02 AM
D.C. police are investigating a shooting on a busy downtown street corner overnight that left as many as 11 people wounded, one of them seriously, authorities said.
Assistant Police Chief Peter Newsham said gunmen in two dark-colored cars opened fire just after 2 a.m. on a crowd of people outside Tyler House , an eight-story public housing complex on the south side of New York Avenue at North Capitol Street.
The seriously injured victim was wounded in the back, Newsham said. “Thank God no one was killed,“ he said.
The shooting occurred across the street from the Big Ben Liquor store in the Truxton Circle neighborhood. Several people were shot on the street corner just outside the liquor store last year. Police at the time said that shooting may have stemmed from a dispute with people at Tyler House.
At 6 a.m. Monday, police were still at the scene of the overnight violence, collecting evidence such as spent shell casings. Officers also were busy interviewing witnesses and victims scattered at three city hospitals.
Authorities said it was too early to know of a motive in Monday`s shooting.
