St. Louis Eight Limb Revolution Warrior, 2015 by Lisa Marie Thalhammer, collage, gouche, ink and salt on paper, 12″ x 24″
Visual artist Lisa Marie Thalhammer was born and raised in Florissant, MO, across the highway from Ferguson, MO in North St. Louis County. For the exhibition Black Lives/White Light, Lisa Marie collages an eight limb figure amongst the St. Louis skyline. As the community of Ferguson has found their activist voice through tragedy and destruction, the figure in Lisa Marie Thalhammer’s artwork also finds their fighting voice as boxing gloves swirl out their mouth. The gloves then circle back to figure, implying a cycle of defense and destruction.  Inspired by Hubble telescope imagery, the figure exists amongst a texture created with ink, gouache and salt, implying that all trauma and suffering has implications upon the larger collective cultural consciousness.

Eight Limbs, 2015 by Lisa Marie Thalhammer, Liquitex gloss medium, metallic powder and collage on ceramic bowl.
Inspired by the healing and purification practice of yoga, visual artist Lisa Marie Thalhammer collages a figure referencing the eight limbs of yoga as outlined by Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra: ethics (yama), restraints (niyama), postures (asana), breath regulation (pranayama), detachment (pratyahara), concentration (dharana), meditation (dhyana), liberation (Samadhi).
Lisa Marie is currently participating in the 200-hr Buddha B Yoga Teacher Training Certification program, which is recognized by the national Yoga Alliance and designed to be a deeply transformative experience.
