Subject: Thanksgiving Message and December SMD Meeting Notice
Here we are at the start of the end of the year holiday season. I know we have had some challenges over the past several months and there will no doubt be more obstacles to overcome in the days ahead. Even so, I’m sure that all of us have many things to be thankful for. I, for one, am thankful for so many great neighbors who are not only striving to make a better life for themselves and their own families, but who by their actions, have shown that they care about the greater community and want to make life better for their neighbors as well.
Our final Single Member District (SMD) meeting of 2015 will be held two weeks from today, on Wednesday, December 9, 2015, at 6:30 pm. That’s right, not a Saturday morning, but a Wednesday evening. And not at Dunbar Senior High School, but at Friendship-Armstrong Public Charter School (formerly Community Academy Public Charter School) at First and P Streets, N.W. Additionally, this will be a joint meeting with ANC5E04, the Single Member District in the Eckington neighborhood that borders us on the east side of North Capitol Street, and ANC5E06, the SMD to our immediate north which straddles Florida Avenue and combines the northern edge of the Bates community with the southern edge of the Bloomingdale neighborhood. We will spend one hour focused on the North Capitol and Bates Streets lot and try to determine which, if either, of the two bidding developers we want to support as a community, and we will spend the second hour on the issue of what can be done to make the intersection of North Capitol Street and Florida Avenue safer, cleaner and more livable. With regard to the N. Cap. & Bates lot, the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development has extended the comment period through Friday, December 11, 2015, so we will be able to weigh in on the awarding decision after the two developers come before us on the 9th to answer our questions.
Please come out to this final meeting of the year and let’s start to build some bonds with our neighbors to the east and to the north. A flyer is attached. If you can, please print out copies to share with neighbors in your block.
Thank you for all of your support this year and please, have a happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday.
Bradley A. Thomas
