Subject: Ward 5 Bates Area/Hanover Public Safety Walk May 30, 2017 @ 3:30PM

Good Evening Friends and Neighbors:

You may have heard by now that we had a disturbing episode involving multiple gunshots fired late this (Monday) afternoon.  It started in the Hanover Area and spread to the Bates Area.  This comes on the heals of a fatal shooting near the corner of First and Q Streets, N.W., early Saturday morning, and a non-fatal shooting event in the unit block of Bates Street, N.W., on last Monday evening.  I have been in touch with MPD Fifth District Commander Fitzgerald and the Office of Mayor Bowser, and a public safety walk has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 30th, beginning at 3:30 pm in front of Dunbar Senior High School, 101 N Street, NW.  Mayor Boswer, along with ranking members of the Metropolitan Police Department are going to join us, as we walk through several blocks in the Hanover and Bates communities, winding up near 3rd and Q Streets, N.W.

If you are not working tomorrow afternoon, of if you can get off early, please come and participate.  We want to show, by our presence, that our community is serious about public safety.  If you can’t make the walk on Tuesday (or even if you do make the walk), Police Chief Peter Newsham will be at the Bates Area Civic Association Meeting on Monday, June 5th, beginning at 7 pm, at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church (3rd & Q Streets, N.W.).  All are invited, not just Bates area residents, so please come and, as I like to say, be a part of the solution.

Bradley A. Thomas
