AGENDA
LANDMARK DESIGNATION HEARINGS
Washington Animal Rescue League Animal Shelter, 71 O Street NW, Case 16-07.
The Board designated the Washington Animal Rescue League Animal Shelter a historic landmark in the D.C. Inventory of Historic Sites with a period of significance of 1932, a reduced boundary, and with the building’s main block being the only contributing and character-defining feature. The Board requested that the nomination be forwarded to the National Register of Historic Places for listing as of local significance. Vote: 6-3.
Folger Shakespeare Library amendment, 201 East Capitol Street SE, Case 18-16.
The Board voted to support an amendment to the DC Inventory and National Register designations for the Folger Shakespeare Library that provides additional information on the history and architecture of the Folger, and designation of interior spaces under National Register Criteria A and C. The amendment retains the 1929-1932 period of significance for the property. Vote: 9-0.
FOGGY BOTTOM HISTORIC DISTRICT
2507 I Street NW, HPA 19-040, concept/three-story rear addition.
The Board approved the concept as compatible with the character of the historic district, with the conditions that: (1) the addition be two stories, not three; (2) the façade’s door and window configurations be revised as suggested in the HPO report; (3) the floor framing not be demolished; (4) the original front-yard grade be restored; and (5) further review of the project be delegated to staff. Vote: 8-0 (Crane recused).
KINGMAN PARK HISTORIC DISTRICT
2419 Benning Road NE, HPA 19-101, concept/new third-story addition.
The Board approved the concept proposal for alterations and a third-story addition to 2419 Benning Road as the project is compatible with the character of the historic district in its Benning Road context. Vote: 9-0.
LEDROIT PARK HISTORIC DISTRICT
513 Florida Avenue NW, HPA 19-039, concept/fourth floor addition on top of three- story rowhouse.
The Board found the concept for a third-story addition on the two-story rowhouse at 513 Florida Avenue NW to be incompatible with the character of the LeDroit Park Historic District and inconsistent with the purpose of the preservation act. Vote: 6-2-1.
DUPONT CIRCLE HISTORIC DISTRICT
1827-29 M Street NW, HPA 18-518, concept/rear addition.
The Board found the concept for a five-story rear addition to be compatible with the character of the historic district in its setback, orientation, and massing, and that the project should return for final concept review when the architectural plans have been further developed. Vote: 9-0.
PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE/DOWNTOWN HISTORIC DISTRICT
512 10th Street NW, HPA 19-100, concept/renovation with new addition.
The Board approved the general conceptual design for façade alterations and a two-story roof addition with the recommendations that the metal screening element on the roof addition be further simplified and/or that its canted massing be simplified and that the new floor in the existing building not intersect with the existing window openings on the third floor. The project should return to the Board for further review when ready and should include information on whether a subdivision is required. Vote: 9-0.
