Tour: Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter School
Date
Monday, April 22 2019
Time
4:00pm–5:30pm
Designed by Studio Twenty Seven Architecture, this project creates a new educational campus for 500 students from the Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter School. Overall, the campus includes a renovated 40,000-square-foot former public school building for 1st-through-5th Grade and a new 10,000-square-foot annex for Pre-K and Kindergarten. The buildings received LEED Gold and Platinum certifications from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
As a public charter school, Mundo Verde is a bilingual school where literacy and language acquisition in both English and Spanish is emphasized. It is free and open to all Washington, DC residents, connecting children from different backgrounds and cultures.
The school has created mission-specific connections between their new home and their curricula, maximizing the campus as a learning laboratory. It has also helped children connect with sustainability and nature thought their campus design. Outside, students take advantage of garden classrooms that support migratory birds and butterflies, as well as vegetable gardens that support the school cafeteria.
